~ Kathi Colton ~
Again, thanks... My son is slowly working his way back up after being put on level 1.
He has now been in the program for 21 months and seems to be going into another
depressive type of thing. I am just hoping to gain enough referrals... we have
used up every financial resource we once had and have no other options. These referrals
have saved his life. He is alive because of this program!!!.

After much time, research, and many phone calls to other
programs, my search was ended when I found the enrollment information number for the
Program in a magazine ad. I was overwhelmed with the relief I felt in knowing that I'd
finally found 'the one' I'd been so desperately been looking for. The steps were taken,
and my son soon found himself off the streets and in the hands of the very capable, loving
staff.

A few months later my best friend, Mary Warren, received a gift from my original
efforts . . . the gift of having me simply hand her the phone number I had found, for it
saved her daughter's life in the process. And eventually her son's as well.
I've had several Program referrals since that time almost five years ago. Even though the
referral tuition credit was what allowed my son to graduate the Program, never once did I
approach them with 'what was in it for me.' The tuition credit was merely a delightful
'bonus.' The real reward was in reaching out and being there for another family in pain.
I can't help but tell people about this Program. It not only saved my son's life, but
taught me how to save my own as well. And my two daughters. And now my new baby grandson.
What we've done has 'broken the cycle' that our family has been in for generations. And
it all started with a kid who was so out of control we didn't know what to do with him.

I began using the Referral Program because I had two
children in the Program. But soon it wasn't about keeping my kids in the Program; it was
more from a passion. I knew I had something that was good and I knew I had something that
worked. I started by giving a Program business card to someone and they it passed on to
two other people, and it ended up in the hands of a third party, two states away. On the
back of the card I had written my ID number and my phone number. However, they contacted the
enrollment department directly, and their staff notified me.

After that I began information seminars regarding at-risk youth and contacted PTA, local authorities, juvenile
authorities, even my apartment complex and handed out a packet of information about the
Program. Everywhere I went I always had a packet with me. For example, there were two
referrals from my morning latte’ stop and three from my dentist. My most creative referral,
I suppose, was when I was getting a different overseas phone service and the AT&T operator
asked why I needed it. So I told her my story. I never did meet her, but she became a
referral. I think it came from my enthusiasm and my passion to help.
I think it is really awesome to give parents another option to finance their child’s
Program, coupled with the opportunity to give back and to participate. My family is a
product of the Referral Program, a gift I'll always be grateful for. But remember, it
takes time. It was nine months after I first heard about the Program before I was willing
to pick up the phone and make 'that call.'
I can't begin to tell you how many friendships I have as a result of working with the
Referral Program. To see them go from no hope, despair, stress, and fear to a renewed
sense of joy, freedom and happiness. It's just awesome. For me to know that I've played a
part in their recovery warms my heart.

When I'm asked why I go to the effort, time involvement
and personal expense of utilizing the Referral Program, I have to take a look at where my
family was three years ago and at all the healing that has taken place. I know how hard it
was to find someone to talk to and how hard it was to find a program for our daughter. It
was so helpful to have other parents to talk to that had gone through what we were going
through. I do a lot of listening and I send a lot of information out to them on the parent and the
teen seminars.

I really stress the parent's side of the Program, and that their participation and
commitment is critical in how their family progresses. I have never had even one person
object to my approach; they are just always so grateful to have someone to talk to who
understands. When a parent says to me that this is their last resort I say, "No it's not,
it's your new beginning." Whether your child chooses to take it as a new beginning, you
must remember it is their choice. There is nothing that is 100%, no guarantees. But if you
were to ask me if I would make the same choice again that we did to place our daughter in
the Program, without question I would say yes.

I see now how things have unfolded and all the support
that Terri offered me. She understood my fears. I remember her saying, "I am so excited
when we play together." That stuck with me. It really lit up a light bulb for me - it
really carried me forward and gave me hope. I realized this was really an opportunity for
me. Terri said to me, "This information is here for your family,
|
|
but this information is here for you too." I needed that information.
I needed to be okay with who I was and what I was doing. Her sharing the Program with me
was healing for me, not just the family. It was reassuring to me that my son was in a safe
place. Just having him placed in the Program was very reassuring.
There are so many opportunities here for my life. I am just so happy now. I love my life. I
know that I take that with me every day and now, when I have the opportunity to share that
with someone else, I do. I am just putting it out there. Now I get emails and phone calls
from others, that I have shared the Program with, that say, "Life is great! Thanks! I
didn't even need to take Alka-Seltzer today!"
People are always looking for an answer. Some people want an answer they can put in a
binder and put it on a shelf and look at it when they need it, but what Terri's enthusiasm
and sharing did for me was encourage me to go the distance. Her giving back touched me. I
passed it on and touched others. This is a wonderful process that is worth sharing. I am so
excited everyday to use this information. I'm so grateful Terri shared her experience with
me. For me, that personal contact, having the opportunity to share with someone else that
knows what you are going through made all the difference.
